As of November 21st, hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian people have rallied in Ukraine’s major cities, including its capital, Kyiv. Each day, the numbers grow larger and larger, making this a populist movement Ukraine has not seen since its Orange Revolution in 2004. The Euromaidan protests began peacefully, calling for President Yanukovych to sign the Association Agreement with the European Union at the Vilnius Summit in Lithuania. As of Friday, November 29th, the Ukrainian riot police began senseless beatings of these peaceful protestors and journalists, forcing them to disband. Despite being disbanded, the protestors returned again, stronger and more numerous than ever.
The purpose of the Euromaidan protests is simple: to begin a democratic way of life, free of the remnants of Soviet communism. The Ukrainian people believe that the only step towards progress is a step to the West. Meanwhile, President Yanukovych plans to take the country to the East, toward the corrupt Russian system that Ukraine spent centuries fighting for independence.
As such, we, The Federation of Ukrainian Student Organizations of America, urge you, Honorable Congressman, to pass sanctions against President Yanukovych and his Cabinet of Ministers, unless they accept the will of the Ukrainian people to join in an Association Agreement with the European Union. We strongly ask that the sanctions include: a ban of entrance to the United States of America and to the European Union for Mr. Yanukovych, his Cabinet of Ministers, and their families; a freeze of all bank accounts affiliated with Mr. Yanukovych and his Cabinet of Ministers; and cease trade with all businesses affiliated with President Yanukovych and his regime.
We appreciate your support in this time of instability in Ukraine.
